When to replace ping pong  paddle rubber?

If you got a good quality sheet of rubber, it should last about 80 hours, meaning you can use a ping pong paddle rubber for about four to five months if playing regularly.

Since the rubber is relatively expensive, you should use some methods to make ping pong paddle sticky instead of replacing it. This approach will make the best use of the rubber.

However, when the rubber is dead, it is time for you to get a new one!

How to remove the old rubber?

These are the steps to replace ping pong paddle rubber:

  • Peel off the edge protector and the old rubber.
  • Clear the blade and all residue.
  • Apply an even coat of glue to your blade and new rubber.
  • Wait for the glue to dry.
  • Stick and roll the rubber on the ping pong paddle.
  • Cut the rubber to the blade.

Removing the edge protector and peeling off the old rubber

The first thing is to get the rubber off the old bat. Gently remove the edge protector and peel off the old rubber little by little.

Remember not just rip it off because you’ll end up leaving a lot of sponge and residue on the wood.

Gently peel the old rubber off to avoid damaging it

Remember not to yank the rubber. Some of us tend to splinter the blade or to damage the rubber.

However, you do not want to do that because in case you are dissatisfied with the new rubber, you may want to put the old one back on. Therefore, remove the old rubber as gently as possible.

You should start by coming around the bat and slowly peeling the rubber off.

Making sure the surface of the blade is clean

You need to make the blade completely flattened by using your fingers or palms to determine where the residual glue is and brush it off.

If it is a very rough surface, you may get a bit of sandpaper, smooth that off.

Make sure that the surface is nice and clean!

Gluing the blade and the new rubber

After unwrapping the new rubber package, we start putting the glue on the surface of the rubber.

Pour the inorganic glue on the rubber. You only need a moderate amount in a line shape before spreading it.

Pour an adequate amount of glue on the blade and the rubbers

Use a sponge to brush the glue evenly across the sheet of the rubber. Remember to clean the glue gently in one direction, and make it a thin layer.

For the blade, use some glue all over the surface of the wood. You can use a sponge or a bit of cardboard to spread the glue.

Keep brushing it in the same direction until you finish.

Waiting for the glue to dry

Wait for about ten minutes. Let the glue dry. You can use electric fans or the cool mode of a hair dryer to accelerate the drying process.

Sticking the rubber on to the blade and cutting it out

After drying the glue, gently attach the rubber to the blade.

You do not need a lot of glue with the water-based one, but you have to make sure that it’s covering the whole surface.

Usually, we start sticking from the bottom of the ping pong paddle and rolling the rest of the rubber on to the blade.

When it is in the correct position, you can use tools like a wall painter or something in a cylinder shape to roll over the rubber and make it firmly stick together.

Try to avoid getting air bubbles.

Cutting the rubber along the edge of the blade

The new rubber starts as a square piece of rubber. The reason they have these square shapes is that you can have different sizes.

Use a cutter to cut the rubber. You can use scissors or a scalpel.

Using scissors

In case you use scissors, most of the cutting is going to be easy. The tricky part is just around the handle where it is hard to get the scissors in.

Start cutting from the around part; get close to the blade and follow its round shape. Cut it little by little along the edge of the blade.

It is going to a little bit sticky because of the glue so do not rush, get the scissors into position and keep cutting around.

Using scalpel

In case you use the scalpel, make sure the cutter is straight to the table surface.

Cut as close as you can along the edge of the blade to put the rubber in the right shape.

The cutter must be straight to the table surface

Cut it using appropriate force. When you reach the edge and about to finish, use less strength to cut it gently.

Repeat the above steps on the other side of the blade.

Some rubbers come with protective sheetings on them to protect the rubber. You just need to take it off gently.
